Camp Counselor

Purpose of the Role:

This Summer Staff Counselor is responsible for providing a friendly, enthusiastic, and fun camping experience for youth. The Summer staff counselor is required to serve as a responsible adult supervising the youth attending ND Farmers Union camp and will implement the youth curriculum and projects.

Supervision:

The Summer Staff Counselor will be under the indirect supervision of the Education Director but will directly report to the Summer Staff Camp Director on a daily basis.

Key Responsibilities:

•Provide group supervision of campers with attention to all of the following: program, health, happiness, discipline, cleanliness, safety, routine duties, character and skill development
•Encourage campers to plan, carry out and evaluate projects and activities
•Foster camper participation in ALL activities
•Assist campers with housekeeping chores
•Teach or assist with camp programs and encourage camper participation
•Exhibit personal habits, health, dress, speech, table etiquette, and relationships with other staff that serve as a beneficial model to campers
•Work with the senior staff senior director and other summer staff to resolve difficulties with facilities, programs, and campers
•Keep all equipment clean and in good working condition, properly stored and used only for the intended purposes
•Establish good relations with all youth members, staff, and vendors associated with Camp and promote the Farmers Union Camp whenever appropriate
•Ensure security, integrity, and confidentiality of data and information
•Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•Possess effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
•Ability to meet deadlines and provide weekly updates
•Ability to work as a team member with other summer staff
•Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and summer staff
•Mental ability to observe camper behavior; assess appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
•Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid by assisting campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury)

Educational Requirements:

•The Summer StaffCounselor shall have a high school diploma or equivalent
•Must be at least 18 years of age
•Required to obtain CPR and First Aid certification and will be compensated
•Lifeguard certification is optional and compensated
•Participation in staff training is required and compensated

Working Conditions:
•Occasional travel
•Strict seasonal schedule; day, evening, and weekend work
•Housing and meals included onsite at camp locations

Facility Maintenance

Purpose of the Role:

The Facility Maintenance Specialist provides the responsibility of on-site personnel to maintain a clean, attractive, and safe environment for all users of Farmers Union Camp. Associated duties will include accepting supplies, maintaining inventories, and required record keeping. North Dakota Farmers Union requires the Facility Maintenance Specialist to maintain acceptable levels of neatness and cleanliness of all buildings, assigned residence, and assigned vehicles. The Facility Maintenance Specialist will be a good ambassador for the Farmers Union Educational program at all times.

Supervision:

The Camp Facility Maintenance Specialist will be under the direct supervision of the Education Director. The Youth Education Director is responsible for all facility management and operating procedures at Camp.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide seasonal maintenance for the entire camp in an orderly and efficient manner
  • Operate and maintain camp water and septic system
  • Establish good relations with all youth members, staff, and vendors associated with camp and promote the education program whenever appropriate
  • Maintain records and inventories of camp equipment and supplies
  • Replacements and/or repairs will be completed as needed
  • Identify health, fire, and safety hazards; inform direct supervisor, summer staff senior director and proper authorities
  • Act on hazards and take necessary remedial actions immediately
  • Keep all equipment clean and in good working condition, properly stored and used only for the intended purposes
  • Maintain the grounds by keeping grass neatly mowed and trimmed and sprayed for bugs and weeds
  • Remove trash and any downed trees and branches
  • Breakdown boxes, collect all recycling, and transport to the recycling center
  • Practice energy conservation for the residence and camp facilities
  • Keep all buildings and furnishings in good repair. Emphasis will be placed on:
    • Dorms, toilet and shower areas
    • Floors, walls, windows, doors and roof
    • Light fixtures, heating and air controls
    • Filter replacements, saltwater monitoring
    • Walkways and porches
    • Kitchen and dining hall
    • Minor plumbing and carpentry repairs will be performed as directed
    • Septic and well maintenance
    • Campfire preparation and cleanup
  • Ensure security, integrity and confidentiality of data and information
  • Occasionally work with members of the summer staff on specific tasks regarding the general operation of camp
  • Required to submit required weekly reports and timesheets
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be experienced in general maintenance duties
  • Must have the ability to operate and maintain motorized equipment and power tools
  • Possess effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and provide weekly updates
  • Participation in staff training, including Leadership Training Camp, is required and compensated

Educational Requirements:

  • FMS shall have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • FMS is required to obtain CPR and First Aid
  • FMS must maintain a valid U.S. driver license
  • Participation in staff training and compensated

Head Chef

Purpose of the Role:

The Head Chef provides the responsibility of an on-site camp facility head chef to maintain a clean, attractive, and safe environment for all users of Farmers Union Camp. Associated duties will include ordering supplies, maintaining inventories, and required record keeping. North Dakota Farmers Union requires the Head Chef to maintain acceptable levels of neatness and cleanliness of self and kitchen environment. The Head Chef will be a good ambassador for the Farmers Union Educational program at all times.

Supervision:

The Head Chef will be under the direct supervision of the Education Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a sanitary and safe environment for food handling, serving, and storing
  • Prepare meal bi-weekly meal plans
  • Follow the budget
  • Plan appropriate food quantities of nutritious and healthy meals for all users of camp
  • Occasionally prepare meals for special dietary needs and food allergies
  • Monitor food inventories and prepare bi-weekly orders
  • Minimize waste on food, supplies and equipment
  • Provide direction to kitchen crews; including campers with food preparation and cleanup
  • Identify health, fire and safety hazards; inform summer staff senior director and camp facility specialist and act on hazards immediately
  • Keep all equipment clean and in good working condition, properly stored and used only for the intended purposes
  • Maintain the kitchen area by keeping all surfaces (walls, counters, equipment, and floors) sanitized and free of clutter
  • Practice energy conservation for the camp kitchen
  • Establish good relations with all youth members, staff, and vendors associated with camp and promote the youth program whenever appropriate
  • Ensure security, integrity, and confidentiality of data and information
  • Occasionally work with members of the summer staff on specific tasks regarding the general operation of camp
  • Submit required weekly reports and timesheets
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be experienced in general institutional or catering food service
  • Knowledge in federal, state, and local food service laws and standard of operations
  • Knowledge in ordering, inventory, budgeting, cleaning, and institutional food equipment maintenance
  • Demonstrate record-keeping skills
  • Possess effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and provide weekly updates
  • Work with all skill types and levels of personnel and members

Educational Requirements:

  • The Head Chefshall have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • The Head Chef is required to obtain CPR and First Aid certification
  • The Head Chef must have a safe food handlers certificate from ServSafe and compensated
  • The Head Chef must maintain a valid U.S. driver license
  • Participation in staff training is required and compensated

Sous Chef

Purpose of the Role:

Associated duties will include assisting the Head Chef with preparing food and maintaining inventories and required record keeping. North Dakota Farmers Union requires the Sous Chef to maintain acceptable levels of neatness and cleanliness of self and kitchen environment. The Sous Chef will be a good ambassador for the Farmers Union Educational program at all times.

Supervision:

The Sous Chef will be under direct supervision of the Education Director but will directly report to the Head Chef on a daily basis.

  • The Sous Chef shall have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • The Sous Chef is required to obtain CPR and First Aid certification
  • The Sous Chef must have a safe food handlers certificate from ServSafe and compensated
  • The Sous Chef must maintain a valid U.S. driver license
  • The Sous Chef must successfully complete Department of Health certification
