Youth learn important skills at camp and in day classes
Learning about cooperatives, principles and developing leadership and citizenship skills through knowledge of rural issues and having fun are a few of NDFU’s youth education goals.
Focus on Educating Youth:
- Organized effort through the NDFU state office and more than 100 volunteers statewide
- Creating new generations of leaders since the early 1930s
- Promoting leadership, responsibility and self- confidence
- Largest camping program in North Dakota
- Each summer, more than 1,500 youth participate in summer camps, day classes and award trips.
- The youth program promotes the organization’s principles of cooperation, legislation and education.
Campers organize & operate their own store selling snacks, beverages, and camp souvenirs, learning about and using the cooperative business model. Campers are educated on various real life issues affecting their generation through hands on lessons, e.g.
- Cultural diversity
- Legislative process
- Mock trials
Other games and activities round out the camp experience, e.g.
- Theme nights
Registration will begin March 1, 2014
AFTER High School:
Farmers Union youth programs do not end after the senior youth program. Youth are challenged to participate in more active leadership roles, such as with collegiate chapters, summer staff positions and serving as Farmers Union representatives in county and state activities. Click here for information on collegiate chapters. For staff positions, contact the state office at 1-800-366-8331 ext.107.
State Youth Advisory Council:
At summer camps, youth vote for representatives to serve on the State Youth Advisory Committee (SYAC). Each council member serves as a liaison for the NDFU youth program and helps define issues that impact youth today. The board was elected by their peers during Farmers Union senior camps throughout the summer. The council meets three times during the year and attend two senior camps the following summer at no cost.
The 2014 elected leaders include:
Nicollete Bitz of Napoleon
Karly Held of Egeland
Sierra Jundt of Rugby
Nick Stevens of Valley City
Nick Watne of Jamestown
Lexie Weber of New Rockford

"NDFU is one of the great organizations that promotes youth leadership. NDFU helps develop campers into efficient leaders by teaching positive life skills. Most of my leadership developed from NDFU camp."
